Pipevine and the Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly
Guest Speaker: Dr. Hesh Kaplan
Both the California pipevine, Aristolochia californica, and the Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly are native to Marin County. Botanist Hesh Kaplan will discuss the many special features of the pipevine, its trickery and how to propagate it. The second part of the talk will focus on the Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly and its intimate relationship with the pipevine plant. The Swallowtail is also endowed with abundant trickery.
Dr. Kaplan received his PhD in Botany from Oregon State University and has been involved in the California Native Plant Society for more than 40 years, first with the San Gabriel Chapter in L.A. County, then the Sanhedrin Chapter in Lake County and Inland Mendocino County, and now with Mount Lassen Chapter, where he serves on the Board. He has had a long and varied botanical career that included research director of and consultant to agribusiness, and author of two books and numerous publications. He taught native plant propagation techniques as a volunteer in Cameroon, and at age 60 he joined the Peace Corps and spent 28 months in Paraguay cataloguing and writing obits of the plant species that were soon to be under water from the construction of a new dam. Of non-botanical interest, he is a high school classmate and friend of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
