Leader: James Hart, Conservation Manager at Pollinator Partnership
On May 12, James Hart spoke at our meeting about Project Wingspan: Golden State, an initiative of Pollinator Partnership with the goal to increase the supply of local native seed and plants in the Bay Area. The project is a collaboration with numerous partners and volunteers to locate native plant populations, collect seed, and multiply that seed. The resulting locally-adapted seed and native plants will be used by homeowners and land managers to create and enhance pollinator habitat. See video of the meeting here on the CNPS Marin YouTube Channel.
Join Pollinator Partnership in collecting local-ecotype native wildflower seed! We will be gathering seed from California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) at Mt. Burdell Open Space Preserve to help support the planting of native pollinator habitat in Marin County. We will also keep an eye out for any other species that are blooming on the mountain, including cobwebby thistles and winecup clarkia.
We will hike along the San Andreas Fire Road up to the Deer Camp Fire Road, over to the Cobblestone Fire Road, and back along the Middle Burdell Fire Road. This will create a 4-mile loop in total. Pollinator Partnership staff will provide the supplies needed (pruners, bags, gloves) for collecting seed, and will guide participants in proper seed collecting techniques, including sanitary protocols to ensure ecologically sound collecting. This seed collection event is part of Project Wingspan: Golden State, an initiative of Pollinator Partnership funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Seed collected through this event will be amplified and provided for free to qualified pollinator habitat planting projects in the area. You can learn more about Project Wingspan on their website.
Important: This is a strenuous hike and requires an uphill climb of about 700 feet over the course of 4 miles. We will be hiking to an area with ample Eschscholzia californica found on the northwestern portion of the mountain. Off-trail collecting will be optional. We encourage participants to consider their personal comfort and fitness levels when deciding whether to join. Your well-being and safety are important to us!
