Navigating Nature: Design and Natural Process in Small Gardens

Speaker: Todd Gilens

As we work with native plants towards establishing healthy ecosystems, we necessarily learn more about those systems – as well as our culture and ourselves. Using examples from gardens and wilderness areas, art and urban design, this presentation will explore some of the sources of design in relation to ideas of nature. The focus will be on the intimate rewards and challenges of small private gardens.

Todd Gilens is a garden designer and visual artist based in the Bay Area since 2002. He has worked in commercial landscape architecture offices and taught graduate and undergraduate courses in the ecology of design at the Academy of Art University, and occasionally leads field classes in poetry and photography for the Point Reyes National Seashore Association and the Center for Photographic Art. He holds a master’s degree in landscape architecture from Harvard University and lives in Richmond, California.
