Muir Beach & Redwood Creek: field trip

Tanya Baxter, vegetation ecologist at Redwood Creek, a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, will show us the restoration work that has been done there over the last five years. We will follow one of two possible routes. We could walk by the riparian corridor and then back up towards the coastal trail realignment and get a close-up of the creek channel and realignment. It is a wetland, so close-toed shoes are highly recommended and we will walk through some soggy areas, but will get to see the restoration channel up close where there is a suite of interesting species.

Alternatively, we could walk along the coastal trail to access a portion that was planted and has interesting emergent wetland species. This can be accessible for folks that don’t want to risk wet feet and is limited in the diversity that we will encounter. We can still view the newly planted floodplain up close and the other planting areas.

For an overview of the restoration project, see http://www.nps.gov/goga/naturescience/muir-beach.htm.

Meet at the Pelican Inn, 10 Pacific Way, Muir Beach. Wear sturdy and waterproof footwear, and bring lunch and water.
