Mt. Tam offers a wide variety of plant communities with many rare and endemic plant species. Join Robert Steers botanist and author of the recently published Plants of Mount Tamalpais for an exploration on the mountain.
To best avoid the Dipsea Race crowds on this day, we will meet at Bon Tempe Lake within the Marin Municipal Water District lands.
Enter Marin Watershed lands off the Bolinas-Fairfax Road. Pay the day use fee at the Sky Oaks Entrance Station. Meet Robert at the Bon Tempe Lake Trailhead at 10 am.
The route will start at the parking lot and then cross the Bon Tempe Dam until we meet Alpine – Bon Tempe Pump Rd. We’ll take the “pump” road to the west until we get well into the Douglas-fir forest. Besides the forest, there are serpentine outcrops along the way and hopefully, we will see Sedum radiatum (Coast range stonecrop) on the roadcuts if still in flower. Then, we will head back to where we started.
If we have time and folks are up for it, we can go up Rocky Ridge Rd to get more variety, before crossing the dam back to the parking lot. Total mileage will be approximately 2 miles and most of the route will be relatively flat, but there will be some steep terrain at times.
Directions: Meet at the Bon Tempe Lake Trailhead
Bring: Parking fee, Water, lunch, and rain gear.
Rain cancels.
