Marin Headlands Tour

Julian Trail, Hawk Hill, Pt. Bonita Lighthouse & Trail, Golden Gate National Recreation Area

Leaders: Ann Elliott & Renee Fittinghoff

Please sign up for this field trip on Meetup.

Parking can be limited at the locations of our stops, so we will meet at the intersection of McCollough and Bunker Roads to carpool. See Directions.

Julian Trail: We will explore this north-facing portion of the Coastal Trail with a wide variety of typical coastal flowers and shrubs. We expect a few lingering spring wildflowers, like columbine, coastal onion, buckwheat, clarkia, coastal angelica. We will descend gently for about one-half mile and then return.

Hawk Hill Visitor Improvement Project and Mission Blue Butterfly Habitat Restoration: After leaving the Julian Trail, we will turn right on Conzelman Rd. and drive to Hawk Hill. We will explore the very successful and ongoing restoration project and be on the lookout for Mission Blue Butterflies (less than 1 mile). See the links below for a history of this project and information about Mission Blues.

Picnic: Continuing west on Conzelman Rd. we will stop for lunch at the picnic area above Bicentennial Campground.

Pt. Bonita Lighthouse: Continuing on Conzelman Rd., we will observe more late spring coastal vegetation and pillow basalt along the half-mile trail to the lighthouse. Back at the cars we return to our carpool site along Field and Bunker Roads.

After passing through the tunnel, continue through the former military housing. At McCollough Road, turn right into a dirt parking area. We will consolidate into fewer cars and head up McCullough to the junction with Conzelman Road. The trailhead and a breezy vault toilet are on the right.
