Geologic History & Soil Development of the San Francisco Bay Area

Nicole Myers
Join geologist Nicole Myers to learn about the geologic forces that have shaped the San Francisco Bay Region. The tectonic & volcanic history of the region is stored in the rocks & landscape of the region, which reveal ~200 million years of shifting tectonic forces, faulting, eruptions, and evolution, all of which have strongly influenced landscape & soil development. We will take a journey through geologic time and consider how our local geology, faults, rivers, volcanic eruptions, and climate change have created the unique soils that our native plants have evolved with.
Nicole Myers, M.S. in Geological Sciences, developed a passion for understanding the Earth from a childhood fascination with rocks and volcanoes, and now teaches others to appreciate planet Earth. Nicole has been teaching earth science classes, including geology, climatology, & earth history for more than eighteen years. Nicole brings her enthusiasm to the community by offering earth science field explorations and presentations. She has taught at Sonoma State University, College of Marin, and Santa Rosa Junior College, and offers community education through her business Appreciating Earth
Biography: Nicole attended the University of Oregon in Eugene where I earned a B.S. in Geological Sciences and a minor in Environmental Sciences. After spending a year as a lab technician in the geologic engineering industry I moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas, where I earned a M.S. in Geological Sciences with a focus on Physical Volcanology. After concluding my formal education, I moved back to Sonoma County, California and began teaching Earth & Space Sciences at Sonoma State University, Santa Rosa Junior College, & College of Marin. I discovered my passion for teaching when I taught Introduction to Earth Sciences at SSU for education majors in 2007.
