Bowman Canyon

Bowman Canyon, part of Mt. Burdell OSP, Novato

Leaders: Caleb Hute & Woody Elliott

Please sign up on Meetup

During this outing, we will hike through oak woodland and grasslands to reach the recently acquired Mount Burdell Bowman Canyon serpentine habitat. The hike will be an approximately 3-mile round-trip. Depending on weather leading up to the trip, there is a chance to see a variety of more ephemeral species, including late spring holdouts like California buttercup, owls clover, various true clovers, and goldfields. Regardless of the weather, we will discuss the significance and identifying characteristics of perennial shrubs and trees present along the trail, including oaks, California bay laurel and more. The hike is easy to moderate, with some steeper sections, and a few uneven patches of fire road. For the best experience, wear sturdy shoes and long pants.

Directions: Parking is very limited, so we will carpool. Meet in the Harvest Market parking lot at the corner of San Marin Drive and San Ramon Way at 9 am. The trailhead is 5 minutes away.

Bring: Water, a snack/lunch. Dress in layers.

Rain cancels. Check Meetup for notification.

If you have not done so already, please sign the CNPS Marin 2026 Waiver

Note: Destructive invasive plant pathogens and weed seeds can be transported to sensitive plant habitats when contaminated soil or plant material is shed from footwear, equipment (such as hiking poles), and other personal items.
