DESCRIPTION:Marin Chapter Meeting\nStreptanthus glandulosus subsp. secundusSerpentine patch west of Big Rock on Lucas Valley RoadKristin Jakob\n“Serpentine Habitats and Plants in Marin County”\nSpeaker: Kristin Jakob, Botanist, Landscape Designer, Botanical Illustrator\nMonday, July 13, 2026, 7:30 pm\nWe are fortunate in Marin County to have a number of publicly-accessible examples of relatively intact serpentine preserves, including Ring Mountain, Old Saint Hilary’s and Middle Ridge in Tiburon, Bootjack, Rock Spring and adjoining areas on Mt. Tamalpais, Carson country and Giacomini Open Space northwest of the peak, and Burdell Mountain/Bowman Canyon in Novato. Due to the special and often difficult conditions serpentine creates, a variety of serpentine-tolerant plant species have evolved. Quite a few of these plants are rare and some of extremely limited distribution. Kristin will give us an introduction to these remarkable habitats and plants of Marin.\nA member of CNPS since the age of twelve, Kristin first learned about Marin’s flora through chapter field trips. She has served on the Marin Chapter board as Program Chair since the 1980s, then as Plant Sales Co-Chair, and more recently as Acting President, Co-President and currently, President.Kristin has been gardening for over 50 years, primarily in Marin County, where she first planted California native plants during her early teens. Natives remain a special interest, alongside other ornamental plants from around the globe. She has worked for Smith & Hawken nurseries and Green Jeans Garden Supply, conducts plant consultations and plant selection for residential clients, and has volunteered her expertise for public gardens.\nKristin is also an accomplished botanical illustrator; amongst her published commissions are the CNPS poster “Wildflowers of the Sierra Nevada” and the Society’s set of grass posters/placemats. She both illustrated and co-edited the UC Press book Wild Lilies, Irises and Grasses – Gardening with California Monocots, and periodically illustrates new species descriptions for botanists for publication in scientific journals.\nRegister for this Zoom meeting here.
